מאז ה-7 בספטמבר 2014 האזרח אברה מנגיסטו מוחזק בשבי חמאס.
אברה, מתמודד נפש, חצה את הגדר לעזה ומאז, במשך 8.5 שנים, גורלו לא נודע. למרות הזמן הרב שחלף לא התקבל שום מידע לגבי מצבו ולא ניתן שום סימן חיים.
בדצמבר 2021 הפרויקטור הצבאי לשבויים ונעדרים פרש מתפקידו, ואמר: "החמצנו שתי הזדמנויות לעסקה".

לצערנו הרב, גם לאחר פרסום הסרטון, היינו מצפים שהתקשורת הישראלית ומקבלי החלטות יעסקו בסוגיה אבל דומה שזה לא באמת מעניין אותם.
"יושב שמה אברה מנגיסטו. בוא אני אשאל אותך, אם זה היה בן של חבר'ה מקושרים מרמת אביב, גם היו שוכחים את הבחור הזה?", אמר רה"מ לשעבר, נפתלי בנט, בחודש פברואר 2021.
כנראה שהתשובה לשאלת בנט היא חד משמעית: לא. אילו היה מדובר בשבוי עם משפחה מקושרת פוליטית, חברתית וכלכלית הטיפול היה נראה אחרת.

זו קריאת השכמה לציבור הישראלי. כעת, כשיודעים באופן וודאי שאברה נמצא בחיים, עלינו האזרחים מוטלת האחריות להפעיל לחץ ולדרוש ממשלת ישראל לפעול להשבתו.

העצומה הזו נועדה להזכיר לנו הציבור, לתקשורת ולממשלה - שאסור לנו להפקיר את אברה בשבי.

חתימה על העצומה היא התחייבות לכך שבמבחן אברה אסור לנו להיכשל מוסרית, ערכית וחברתית. אנחנו דורשים מממשלת ישראל והעומד בראשה לפעול להשבת אברה.

In January 2023, the Hamas organization distributed a video, in which Mengistu is seen for the first time.
"I am the prisoner Avera ​​Mengistu, how long will I be here? How long will me and my friends remain here in captivity after many years of suffering and pain? Where is the state and people of Israel that will take care of our fate?", Avera ​​asks.
After the publication of the video, we would have expected the Israeli media and decision-makers to deal with the issue, but it seems that they are not really interested.
"His name is Avera ​​Mengistu. Let me ask you, if this was the son of connected guys from Ramat Aviv, would they also forget this guy?" said former Prime Minister, Naftali Bennett, in February 2021.
Undoubtedly the answer to Bennett's question is no. A prisoner from a politically, socially and economically connected family, would have been treated differently. This is a wake-up call for the Israeli public. Now that we know for sure that Avera is alive, we as citizens have the responsibility to exert pressure and demand that the Israeli government act for his return.
This petition is intended to remind us the public, the media and the government - that we must not abandon Avera in captivity.
Signing the petition is our commitment to Avera. This is a ​​test that we may not fail morally, ethically and socially. We demand that the Israeli government and its leader act to restore Avera.
